The Beaver Valley and surrounding area is home to a wide variety of birds of prey. These include eagles, falcons, hawks, osprey, owls, and vultures. I recall seeing my first turkey vultures our second summer here while fishing. I thought they were eagles and excitedly relayed my story to our neighbours and now close friends, Wayne and Susan Hill. Wayne set me straight and told me that this is the first time he’s seen them since he was a boy. Apparently, when the environment became saturated with insecticides such as DDT, turkey vultures stopped migrating to our area. As the environment restored itself after the ban of DDT, which took about two decades, they returned. Another good news story is the increasing number of bald eagle sightings in our area every year.

This work depicts a northern goshawk.
